PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This gamification-based activity highlights the evaluation and treatment of idiopathic hypersomnia and narcolepsy, and includes a discussion of the pathophysiology of these sleep disorders, their impact on patients, and clinical data on the efficacy of newer treatments.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The Online Patient Progressions Jeopardy Challenge program is intended for neurologists, internists, psychiatrists, and sleep specialists who treat patients with or who are at risk for excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
On completing this program, attendees should be able to:
- Describe the spectrum of idiopathic hypersomnia and the evaluation of individuals for narcolepsy to facilitate their prompt recognition
- Discuss the pathology underlying narcolepsy that negatively affects the wake-producing centers of the brain
- Review the varied burden of illness associated with degrees of excessive daytime sleepiness and the positive effects of treatment on quality of life, cardiovascular risk, and cognitive function
- Explain the mechanisms of action and clinical trials data of recently approved agents that improve wakefulness in patients with either narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia
